I travel out on business, usually several times a year. I take short-term mission trips, some to places I go back to every year and to others for the first time. Since we don't go through an organization because we're independent, I need all the help I can get. I've found that I need both the guidebooks and online websites because they will each give information that the other may not have, especially if they cover different areas of focus. For example, when I went to Chicago last year for the first time, while I was searching Orbitz for airfares to Chicago, and checking out different arrival days to find the best rate, the website came up with an offer that was way lower than the ones I'd been looking at. When I looked at the airport designation I realized that the website had routed me to Milwaukee's airport instead of Chicago's. At first I didn't see how I could get to Chicago from Milwaukee. But after some research I found that it was actually a better way to go. On our first trip to New York, I based some of my choices on personal experience. We'd been in both JFK and Newark and had had better experiences in Newark than JFK. So, if at all possible, I preferred flying to Newark than to JFK. In this article I'm going to go through the steps that I took to take both trips. The websites I used and which guide books I used and what I used them for. The New York Trip: There were several reasons why we decided to go through Newark instead of JFK. On a couple of my Continental flights I'd found a page in the onboard flight magazine advertising Newark's Airtrain from Newark to New York's Penn Station. It gave very simple, clear instructions. I found Newark friendlier and more cooperative than JFK and considering this was our first trip into NY other than JFK, we wanted the trip to be as uncomplicated as possible. With a little research, I found that not only is Newark closer than all of the NY airports, it's a less complicated route. As far as I can tell, I got our tickets directly from the airline website. This time it was Continental. Though I often use Orbitz to purchase my ticket, then go to the specific airline's website and choose my seats, print off my ticket and sign up for email notifications of itinerary changes which is very important and checkin, printing my boarding pass before I leave for the airport. After we got the plane tickets, I started doing the research for the trip. First, I went on the NJTransit website and the airport's website for the information on the train schedules, maps and locations, hours of operation and photos of the station location, and to preorder the train tickets. Then I looked in the AAA guide book, which is available for free to AAA members at your local office, to see which hotels were nearest Penn Station and the places we planned to see while we were there. Since we would be walking everywhere in town. We planned to see the Empire State Building, the UN and Macy's. Then I checked out the individual hotel websites until I found an available room, that was near the train station, for the best price and reserved it. Frommers is another decent guidebook if you're not a AAA member. Then I noted down the addresses of the hotel from it's website and got the other addresses from the guidebook. Then I went on Mapquest and mapped out our itinerary to and from the train station and to and from the hotel to our planned destinations. I also went on the UN website and the Empire State Building websites for available times, costs and whatever requirements there might be, due to altered security requirements since 911. Since we were parking our car at our airport, I also went on Tampa International's website for their economy parking garage for location and prices. Then the rest of my preparation was spent on wikipedia and in the AAA guidebook going over as many details I could find about the area we were going to, so that we would be prepared when we got there. One of the things I like about Wikipedia are the external links that are often included at the end of their articles, which aid in my research. On our second NY trip I also used the Grayline tours website, the citysearch website and UsAirway's website, along with the previous ones I'd used, or the printouts I already had on some of the information that would still be useful. We took the Downtown loop tour, getting off on several stops and getting back on, then going through Times Square. The Chicago Trip: I did most of the same things as with the NY trips except I did use Orbitz this time and flew out onNorthwest. I also went on the website for theMilwaukee Airport and researched how to get from Milwaukee to Chicago and to locate where the train station was at the airport. I bought my roundtrip Amtrak ticket voucher online. I also researched the places I was planning to visit in the AAA guide book and online on Wikipedia. This website was especially helpful with obtaining useful maps and helpful descritions some of the places I would be going to. I also went on the Chicago Union Station since that's where I'd be arriving at and leaving from. I find that both the guidebooks and the websites each often have different information as well as similar information often from a different perspective which is very helpful, since I'm often on my own on these trips and I'm not interested in getting lost. I especially use both resources for the maps and locations as well as any other information which will help me to do my job with the minimum fuss and expense.
