About 'ascot train station'|The Manatee Goes to Royal Ascot
I think it's impossible not to love Switzerland. It has mountains, lakes, cheese, yodeling, and some of the most picturesque villages in the world. A bit more than a village, Zurich is the largest Swiss city, with a population of nearly half a million. When we visited last year, we marveled at its combination of quiet Medieval charm along with a bustling world banking center. Zurich has almost zero unemployment, and the people there are considered some of the most affluent in Europe. How to Get There Zurich Airport is just 7 miles away from the city, and convenient access is by taxi, bus, or rail. Most international airlines offer regular Zurich service. It's also a great central hub for exploring other parts of Europe. Sightseeing When we first arrived in the city, we had views of the distant Alps from across Lake Zurich. Not content with that situation, we wanted to get closer. We rented a car and drove an hour to the Golden Pass near Lucerne. There, we had close-up views of the snow-capped Jungfrau, rising more than 2 miles above us. We were fortunate to be in Zurich for the annual Swiss National Day, celebrated on the first of August. The festivities included native food offerings, folk music, street parades, native dances, and folklore lectures. It's similar to the July 4th celebrations in the U.S. We enjoyed several enjoyable hours in the old part of town. The history of this city is fascinating. Zurich was first settled by the Romans in the first century A.D. Some of the religious buildings from that era still exist, as well as beautifully preserved Medieval houses, cafes, taverns, and cobbled streets. In the downtown area, there are contemporary glass and metal office buildings, while just around the corner is an 11th-century church and a 15th-century tavern. Hotel Ascot Tessinerplatz 9, Zurich 8002 ascot.ch We stayed in this modestly priced (for Switzerland) small downtown Zurich hotel for the weeknight rate of $165. It's just a few steps from the train station and local tram stop. A short stroll took us to downtown shops, restaurants, museums, and parks. Zeughauskeller Bahnhofstrasse 28a 8001 zeughauskeller.ch There's Fijiwa, a highly recommended Japanese restaurant in the Hotel Ascot, but we wanted to find a genuine Swiss cafe that served local favorites. We found it at this vintage hometown beer hall with down-home, Swiss-themed meals priced from about $20. We ordered local beers, mustard potato salad, kanonenputzer sausage, and wienerschnitzel. We topped off dinner with homemade ice cream cherry schnapps pie. Freddy Sherman is a world traveler and editor of the travel blog travel4people.com. You can follow him on Twitter @thefredsherman.
